How to Squeeze the Most Out of Your PTO in 2027 (Best Days to Take Off)

How to Squeeze the Most Out of Your PTO in 2027 (Best Days to Take Off)

Be honest: did you use all your PTO this year? If not, you're in good company. In a Pew Research Center survey, 46% of U.S. workers who get paid time off said they take less time off than their employer offers (Pew Research Center, 2023). The top reasons? They didn't feel they needed more, they worried about falling behind, or they felt bad about coworkers picking up their work.

Here's the thing. PTO is part of your pay, and you earned it. And with a little planning, the same number of days can buy you a lot more rest. Put four PTO days in the right week of 2027 and you can get nine or even ten days off in a row.

Below, we'll walk through every 2027 federal holiday, the best days to take off around each one, and a few simple rules for planning a year of real breaks. If you'd rather skip the math, our free PTO Planner will do it for you.

Questions Answered

  • What are the 2027 federal holidays?
  • Which days should you take off in 2027 to get the longest breaks?
  • How do you turn 10 PTO days into almost a month off?
  • How do you plan around your company's holidays and busy seasons?
  • When should you request time off?
  • What if your company doesn't observe every federal holiday?

First, Know What You're Working With

Before you plan anything, get clear on three things:

  • How many PTO days you have. Check your offer letter, handbook, or HR portal. Note whether vacation and sick time come from one combined bank.
  • Which holidays your company observes. This is a big one. The U.S. Department of Labor notes that federal law doesn't require private employers to pay for time not worked, including federal holidays, so it comes down to your employer's policy (DOL). Most companies give some paid holidays, though. In March 2026, 81% of private industry workers had access to paid holidays and 80% had access to paid vacation, according to the Bureau of Labor Statistics.
  • Your PTO rules. When do days accrue? Can you carry unused days into next year, or do they expire? Rules vary by employer and state, so check your handbook before you assume.

2027 U.S. Federal Holidays

Here are the 2027 federal holidays as listed by the U.S. Office of Personnel Management. When a holiday falls on a Saturday, it's observed the Friday before; when it falls on a Sunday, it's observed the Monday after. That happens four times in 2027.

| Holiday | Date | Observed (if different) | |---|---|---| | New Year's Day | Friday, January 1 | | | Martin Luther King Jr. Day | Monday, January 18 | | | Washington's Birthday (Presidents Day) | Monday, February 15 | | | Memorial Day | Monday, May 31 | | | Juneteenth | Saturday, June 19 | Friday, June 18 | | Independence Day | Sunday, July 4 | Monday, July 5 | | Labor Day | Monday, September 6 | | | Columbus Day | Monday, October 11 | | | Veterans Day | Thursday, November 11 | | | Thanksgiving Day | Thursday, November 25 | | | Christmas Day | Saturday, December 25 | Friday, December 24 | | New Year's Day 2028 | Saturday, January 1, 2028 | Friday, December 31, 2027 |

Notice the pattern? Every 2027 holiday lands on a Monday, Thursday, or Friday (or is observed on one). That's great news, because it means almost every holiday is already a long weekend, and a few PTO days can stretch it into a full week off.

The Best Days to Take Off in 2027

Here's every major opportunity, with the exact PTO days to request. All of these assume a Monday-to-Friday schedule and that your company observes the holiday.

1. Christmas to New Year's: 4 PTO Days = 10 Days Off

This is the best deal of the year. With Christmas observed on Friday, December 24, and New Year's Day 2028 observed on Friday, December 31, you only need Monday, December 27, through Thursday, December 30 to be off from Friday, December 24, through Sunday, January 2, 2028.

Heads up: this is also the week everyone else wants. If you want it, ask early. And double-check how your company handles the two Saturday holidays, since some employers set their own observed dates.

2. Martin Luther King Jr. Day: 4 PTO Days = 9 Days Off

Take Tuesday, January 19, through Friday, January 22, and you're off from Saturday, January 16, through Sunday, January 24. It's a nice way to break up the long, gray stretch after the holidays.

3. Presidents Day: 4 PTO Days = 9 Days Off

Take Tuesday, February 16, through Friday, February 19 for a break from Saturday, February 13, through Sunday, February 21.

4. Memorial Day: 4 PTO Days = 9 Days Off

Take Tuesday, June 1, through Friday, June 4 to be off from Saturday, May 29, through Sunday, June 6. Prefer to go before the holiday? Taking Monday, May 24, through Friday, May 28 (5 PTO days) gets you Saturday, May 22, through Monday, May 31, 10 days in a row.

5. Juneteenth: 1 PTO Day = 4 Days Off (or 4 = 9)

Juneteenth falls on a Saturday in 2027, so it's observed on Friday, June 18. Add Thursday, June 17 for a four-day weekend. Or take Monday, June 14, through Thursday, June 17 for nine days off, Saturday, June 12, through Sunday, June 20.

6. Fourth of July: 4 PTO Days = 9 Days Off

July 4 is a Sunday, so it's observed on Monday, July 5. Take Tuesday, July 6, through Friday, July 9, and you're off from Saturday, July 3, through Sunday, July 11. Peak summer, peak beach weather.

7. Labor Day: 4 PTO Days = 9 Days Off

Take Tuesday, September 7, through Friday, September 10 for a break from Saturday, September 4, through Sunday, September 12. It's a relaxed way to close out the summer.

8. Columbus Day: 4 PTO Days = 9 Days Off

If your company observes it (not every company does, so check), take Tuesday, October 12, through Friday, October 15 for Saturday, October 9, through Sunday, October 17 off. Fall foliage trip, anyone?

9. Veterans Day: 1 PTO Day = 4 Days Off

Veterans Day is a Thursday. Take Friday, November 12, and you're off Thursday, November 11, through Sunday, November 14. Add Wednesday, November 10 too, and it's five days.

10. Thanksgiving: 1 PTO Day = 4 Days Off (or 4 = 9)

If your company doesn't already give you the day after Thanksgiving, take Friday, November 26 for a four-day weekend, Thursday, November 25, through Sunday, November 28. Want the whole week? Take Monday, November 22, through Wednesday, November 24 plus that Friday (4 PTO days) and you're off from Saturday, November 20, through Sunday, November 28. If your company already gives you that Friday, the full week costs just 3 PTO days.

How to Turn 10 PTO Days Into 27 Days Off

You can't take every break above, so which ones win? We ran the default 2027 settings (10 PTO days, Monday-to-Friday, federal holidays) through the PTO Planner. Here's what it suggested:

| Break | PTO days | Days off | |---|---|---| | Jan 16 – Jan 24 (MLK Day week) | 4 | 9 | | Nov 11 – Nov 14 (Veterans Day) | 1 | 4 | | Nov 25 – Nov 28 (Thanksgiving) | 1 | 4 | | Dec 24 – Jan 2, 2028 (holidays) | 4 | 10 | | Total | 10 | 27 |

Have more days? With 15 PTO days, the planner added a Presidents Day week (February 13–21) and stretched Veterans Day into five days, for 37 days off. With 20, it added a Memorial Day week (May 29 – June 6) and a five-day Thanksgiving break, for 47 days off.

Your results will look different depending on your company's holidays, your work week, and any weeks you can't take off. That's the point: plug in your own setup.

7 Rules for Squeezing More Out of Your PTO

1. Build Around Holidays First

A Monday or Friday holiday plus four PTO days gives you nine days off. A Thursday holiday plus one PTO day gives you four. Start with those, then fill in the rest of the year.

2. Check Your Company's Holiday Calendar (Not Just the Federal One)

Your company might skip Columbus Day but close the day after Thanksgiving, add Christmas Eve, or give you a floating holiday. Each of those changes the math. In the PTO Planner, check or uncheck holidays and add company days off so the plan matches your actual job.

3. Block Out Your Busy Seasons

There's no point planning a trip during quarter-end close or your busiest month. Mark those weeks as blackout dates first, then plan around them. You'll get fewer "can we talk about your request?" messages from your manager.

4. Spread Breaks Across the Year

One giant vacation sounds great until it's March and you haven't had a day off since New Year's. A mix of one or two longer breaks and a few long weekends keeps you from running on empty. If you're feeling stretched thin, our work-life balance tips can help too.

5. Request Early (Especially for Popular Weeks)

Thanksgiving week and the last week of December go fast. Once your plan is set, ask for the most popular dates first. A simple message works:

"Hi (Manager Name), I'm planning my time off for 2027 and would like to request (dates). I'll make sure (project/coverage) is handled before I go. Does that work for the team?"

6. Keep a Small Cushion

If your PTO covers sick days too, don't plan every last day in January. Hold back one or two for the unexpected. Then, if you still have them in the fall, add a long weekend.

7. Don't Let Days Expire

If your company has a use-it-or-lose-it policy, set a reminder for late summer to check your balance. It's a lot easier to find a good week in September than in mid-December, when everyone's scrambling.

Frequently Asked Questions (FAQs)

What's the best week to take off in 2027?

The week between Christmas and New Year's. With both holidays observed on Fridays (December 24 and December 31), four PTO days (December 27–30) give you 10 days off in a row, if your company follows the federal observed dates.

How many PTO days do I need for a 9-day vacation in 2027?

Usually four. Any Monday or Friday holiday (MLK Day, Presidents Day, Memorial Day, Juneteenth observed, Independence Day observed, Labor Day, or Columbus Day) plus four PTO days creates a nine-day break.

Does my employer have to give me federal holidays off?

No, not under federal law. The Department of Labor says paid holidays are a matter of agreement between you and your employer. Check your handbook to see which ones your company observes.

What if my company observes different holidays?

Use your company's list, not the federal one. In the PTO Planner, uncheck holidays you don't get, check the extras you do, and add any company days off. The plan updates instantly.

Is it better to take one long vacation or several shorter breaks?

It depends on you. A full week away helps you truly disconnect, while long weekends spread through the year give you regular breathers. Many people do both: one or two longer breaks plus a few four-day weekends.
