Future of Work

Jobs will evolve; there's no doubt about that. My job here as a writer has even adapted over the past few years (heck, over the past few months).

While we constantly hear about the doom and gloom of automation taking our jobs, with the proper preparation, your career may be more secure than you think. Here’s how you can prepare for the future of work.

Questions Answered

  • How will work change in the future

  • How we can prepare for the future of work

  • What jobs could never be done by a robot?

Robots, AI, and automation. Will they take my job? While many of us look forward to what automation will change within the workforce, others fear it.

So, what does the future of work look like, and how can we prepare?

Throughout history, new technology has changed the nature of employment, often leaving the workforce with fears they might not be needed. But with the latest technology and advancements, jobs and opportunities continue to be created.

While the future of work is still unknown, we have a general sense of what it will look like and how we can prepare.

How Work Will Change in the Future

Continuous Learning Opportunities

Many of us love to learn, but with how quickly technology changes, it’s a “must” to stay relevant in this work world.

Employers will begin to provide more learning opportunities to meet the technological advances in our workforce. This will help prevent a vicious circle of hiring and firing employees, which typically comes with high costs and challenges.

Employees will benefit from these businesses investing in their education, which will, in turn, help advance their careers. Win-win

Augmentation of Human Jobs

Artificial intelligence (AI) will be the new co-worker to employees. We will likely work alongside and coexist with these advanced technologies to work more efficiently.

You've probably already seen software or tech services that have improved how quickly a task is accomplished. Look for this trend to continue on its growth trajectory.

Remote Work

Remote work is already a common practice in today's work world. With the advancements in internet access and mobile phones, employers won't need their employees sitting in an office daily.

While remote work is already a large part of our society, it will only grow as the new generation of workers chooses to live and work where they please.

How to Prepare for the Future of Work

We know changes in the workforce are coming, but how do we prepare? Rather than giving up and acknowledging the "doomsday" theme going around, give this a try:

  • Research: Search Google, LinkedIn, or other articles about the industry you are interested in. Study and figure out what's next.

  • Learn: We will need to continue learning to adapt to changes. The length of a skill lasts continues to shrink, and something you were doing yesterday might not be around next year.  Acquire new skills and keep the mindset of a continuous learner. You can find courses on Udemy or LinkedIn to help!

  • Be Human (Pretty easy, right?): Emotions, creativity, imagination, and passion are a few things machines don't know how to mimic. Leverage them to the best of your abilities.

  • Create Your Path: Climbing the corporate ladder is much different now than it was ten years ago, and it will continue to change. Now YOU have to make the moves and create your career path. Learn as much as possible with a variety of work experiences.

  • Build Soft Skills: Teach and train yourself around soft skills that will benefit you in the future. Communication, business strategy, teamwork, creativity, and ethics are all fantastic skills that can't be automated.

What jobs could never be done by a robot?

There are several jobs and tasks that a robot can perform, but there are countless more that they can’t do (at least right now). Here are eight careers that robots won't likely be replaced shortly.

  • Human Resource Managers

  • Sales Managers

  • Chief Executives

  • Event Planners

  • Teachers

  • Doctors

  • Electricians

  • Childcare Specialists

Wrapping Up | Future of work

While nothing is guaranteed, failing to adapt to the changing work world will put you at a disadvantage in the future. If we don't make the necessary changes today, it will catch up to us tomorrow.

Humans will only become more valuable as robots, automation, and AI continue to grow. We have the skills and emotions that make our careers indispensable. Don't forget that!

While the future of work may already be here and the way we work is changing, robots can't succeed without us.

Humans and machines will collaborate using the best of our strengths. Learn to adapt and focus more on the soft skills that make you human!

Please feel free to reach out if you have any questions about the article or your job search - we would be happy to help. Best of luck out there!
