Leadership Interview Answers

There’s no denying the importance of leadership in today’s professional world. From the boardroom to the battlefield, leadership is essential in helping people follow, trust, and believe in others.

But what makes a good leader in the workplace? And more importantly, how can you demonstrate your leadership skills in a job interview?

Answering a question about leadership during an interview can be difficult, but with proper preparation, you can succeed. Here's how to answer that pesky leadership question in an interview successfully.

4 Steps to properly answer an interview question about leadership

1. Start by Defining What Leadership Is To You

To demonstrate your leadership capabilities to the hiring manager, you have to be able to explain what it is and then do it yourself.

Put your own spin on it, but we define leadership as the ability to get other people to follow you.

It’s the art of convincing others that they want to do what you want them to do. It’s also the act of leading by example.

2. Explain Why Leadership is Important in the Workplace?

Leadership in the workplace is crucial for many core positions.

Put your own spin on it but explain that a leader can make a positive difference in the office/company. They can inspire, motivate, and get other people excited about something.

They can also bring people together from different backgrounds and help create change—all critical aspects of running a successful team or business.

3. Describe How You Demonstrate Leadership

As you’ve learned, leadership is essentially getting other people to do what you need them to do. However, this isn’t something you can just “will into happening.”

You’ll have to work on your leadership traits over time.

One way to demonstrate these skills is to bring up an example of how you have led your company or a group of people in the past. Describe to the hiring manager how you controlled the team, and then explain why you teach that way.

4. Summarize Your Core Leadership Principles

As you discuss your leadership style, it’s critical that you explain the core principles that define it. Leadership fundamentals are the guiding principles of your overall leadership style.

They’re the things that allow you to describe and justify how you would lead a team in the workplace.

Other Common Leadership-Related Questions

  • Can you provide an example of a time when you successfully led a team?

  • How do you motivate your team?

  • How do you handle conflicts or differences of opinion within a team?

  • How do you delegate tasks to team members?

  • How do you ensure that your team is meeting its goals?

  • How do you foster a positive and collaborative team culture?

  • How do you handle difficult team members or situations?

  • Can you describe a situation where you had to make a tough decision as a leader?

  • How do you handle feedback, both positive and negative?

  • How do you stay up-to-date on industry trends and best practices in leadership?

Leadership Interview Example Answers

What does leadership mean to you?

"Leadership to me doesn't just mean showing up to work and telling the team what to do, but instead it's guiding and encouraging them in their everyday tasks and overall career as well. Without that encouragement in the workplace, your employees will burn out and not feel fulfilled in their jobs. The way I've demonstrated my leadership skills in the past typically falls into two buckets. Guidance during their everyday jobs to make sure we accomplish what we set out to do and encouragement in other aspects of their lives to show them I care. This helps them take on full responsibility in what they do and shows how much I value them."

Tell me about a time you demonstrated leadership skills.

"One time when I demonstrated leadership in my previous role was when I was leading a project to revamp our company's customer service process. Many moving parts and stakeholders were involved, and there was a tight deadline for completion. I knew that clear communication and organization would be key to the project's success, so I regularly checked in with team members, delegating tasks as necessary and providing support where needed. I also worked closely with the customer service team to gather their input and ensure their needs were met. By staying on top of the project and keeping everyone informed and involved, we completed the project on time and improved the customer experience. It was a challenging project, but I was proud of the leadership skills I demonstrated in bringing it to a successful conclusion."
