Hiring a new employee can be a daunting task. After all, you’re looking to bring in somebody new to handle crucial tasks for your business regardless of what level position they’re in.
If you make the wrong choice or don’t follow all the standard hiring process steps, you can end up hiring a poor fit that wastes time and resources.
So, what are the steps in the hiring process, and how do they help you hire the right candidate?

Step 1: Identify Your Needs
Before you can start looking for employees, you need to know why you need them in the first place. If you’ve recently lost an employee for whatever reason, this is an easy step.
You need to replace that employee with someone qualified to take their position.
However, it’s not always clear-cut.
Sometimes, you need staff members that weren’t a part of your original model to pick up the slack. In this case, brainstorm where new employees will make a difference, what qualifications are necessary to perform the related tasks, and what type of individual will fit your workplace culture.
Step 2: Market The Position
Once you know exactly what position you’re trying to fill, what’s necessary to fill it, the details regarding compensation, and time commitment – it’s time to put the word out that you’re hiring.
As an employer, you have an advantage on this one. There are typically more people actively searching for jobs than employers are looking to fill positions (although not always the case like we are experiencing now).
So, it shouldn’t be difficult to get a good number of applicants in a short amount of time.
You can market your job opening via social media in several ways.
First, if your business has a social media presence, you can do it directly through the business’s page and boost your post for a small fee to reach potential candidates.
Otherwise, platforms such as Facebook also have dedicated job listing sections.
Also, don’t underestimate the marketing power of Indeed and similar job-search-oriented platforms. People actively searching for work use such platforms far more than they look for specific companies in the modern era.
It is also possible to use LinkedIn and similar platforms to “hunt” for potential employees specifically.
Finally, the traditional route does still work.
Signs in and outside of your business can entice passersby to apply, and using your social network might help you find the perfect candidate.
Step 3: Consider Applications And Interview
Once you have a decent number of applications, it’s time to sit down and check the qualifications of people who are applying.
If applicants don’t present themselves professionally, or they’re simply not qualified for the job, toss their applications aside.
When you’ve narrowed it down to candidates who do match your needs, it’s time to call them to schedule interviews.
If you don’t have a good selection of qualified applicants, it may be wise to lower your requirements slightly.
Don’t lower requirements that are 100% necessary, but try to be flexible in terms of acquired experience and other minor things that can be worked with.
During your interviews, it is best to hold off on making a final decision until you’ve interviewed everyone.
Step 4: Hiring A Candidate
Finally, it’s time to make a choice.
During the interview phase, you should have noted how well the employee matched the job requirements, their overall professionalism, and whether or not they seemed like they’ll fit in with existing staff members.
The best match should be your choice.
However, you’re not done.
Onboarding And The First Week
Once you’ve called someone up with the good news, and unfortunately broke the news to the other interviewees, it’s time to get your new employee accustomed to being part of the team.
On their first day, you’ll need to get all their tax paperwork, emergency contacts, and various other must-have pieces of information from them before you start the training process.
With the proper information secured, you can begin pushing them through the training process and monitoring their performance until they’re good to go on their own.
